Transforming Communities By Promoting
Use of Clean Cooking Fuels
- Household air pollution and health Facts
- According to World Health Organization (WHO)
- ✔ Around 2.6 billion people cook using polluting open fires or simple stoves fuelled by kerosene, biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal.
- ✔ Each year, close to 4 million people die prematurely from illness attributable to household air pollution from inefficient cooking practices using polluting stoves paired with solid fuels and kerosene.
- ✔ Household air pollution causes noncommunicable diseases including stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.
- ✔ Close to half of deaths due to pneumonia among children under 5 years of age are caused by particulate matter (soot) inhaled from household air pollution.
- The advantages of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in comparison to traditional cooking fuels include:
- ✔ Better health: This reduces health problems associated with firewood cooking, such as catarrh, chest pains, and sore eyes.
- ✔ Faster cooking: LPG reduces the time spent cooking, thus freeing up time, for leisure activities and education.
- ✔ Efficiency: LPG is exceptionally efficient at generating heat and has a higher calorific value per unit than other fuels, such as coal and firewood, meaning the flame burns hotter.
- ✔ Good for the environment: Like traditional fuels, LPG does not produce harmful pollutants, such as sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxide. It has 50% fewer carbon emissions than coal and 20% fewer than oil.
- Objectives of AboWest cooking
gas project - ✍ Promote entrepreneurship in the Ward by prioritizing women, Youth, and People living with disabilities as a significant part of the supply chain.
- ✍ Reduce respiratory diseases and mortality rates associated with household air pollution as a result of sustained use of firewood and charcoal.
- ✍ Uplift the quality of life for the majority of Abowest citizens by making clean cooking fuel (LPG) readily available.
- ✍ Enhance LPG penetration in ABOWEST from approximately 30% to 70% within the next three years.
- ✍ Reduce deforestation as beneficiaries move away from the use of biomass (charcoal & firewood).
